U.S. and Algeria launched their joint naval maneuvers early this week, in which the U.S. Sixth Fleet and the Algerian Navy have taken part. The USS Grasp arrived in Algeria on Aug.
5 and is due to leave that country on Aug. 25.
This is the third joint naval exercises conducted by the United States and Algeria since 1998. During the last three years, the U.S. has tried to increase its military and political influence in former French colony, Algeria.
The joint maneuvers take place regardless of the ongoing massacre of the innocent civilians in Algeria. Thousands of innocent people have been killed under mysterious circumstances during the past few years in that country, and the Algerian generals have always blamed the Islamic Group (GIA) and the Islamic Salvation Army (AIS) for the killings.
But according to informed sources inside Algeria, the generals themselves are responsible for this human tragedy in that North African country.
Nearly 300 civilians were killed in July, making it Algeria's bloodiest month since President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who is under the strong influence of the generals, took power in 1998.
Those informed sources believe that the GIA and the AIS are two committed political groups that enjoy great popularity among the Algerians. Thus, the generals who were formerly supported by France and are now backed by the United States aim to tarnish the image of these groups through such massacres.
It is the duty of the international human rights bodies to make a thorough inquiry into the human tragedy that has been going on in Algeria for the last several years.
